Women face numerous challenges in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) from a very young age. Societal norms and stereotypes often discourage girls from pursuing studies in science and mathematics, which ultimately leads to a lower representation of women in these critical fields. From early education through to professional careers, women encounter a range of obstacles that hinder their progress and success in STEM.
In educational settings, girls are often subtly steered away from science and math subjects due to prevailing stereotypes that suggest these fields are more suited to boys. This discouragement can come from various sources, including teachers, peers, and even family members, who may unconsciously perpetuate the notion that STEM is not a suitable path for girls. As a result, many young women may lack the confidence or encouragement needed to pursue these subjects further, leading to a significant gender gap in STEM education.
Once women enter the workforce, they continue to face significant challenges. In many STEM workplaces, women encounter bias and discrimination, which can manifest in various forms, such as being overlooked for promotions, receiving less credit for their work, or being excluded from important projects and decision-making processes.
